Last Thoughts Before Off-Season Gets Underway

There are still some topics from the previous year that I want to discuss, but I want to wait a few more days before I dive into those topics so I don’t let my depression, anger, and frustration get in the way.

In the interim, I want to first thank everyone for their continued support and patronage to njdevils.info and its network. This season began the first full season in which we operated four different sites all devoted to the New Jersey Devils. These sites each have their own focus, but I am working on integrating aspects of each with each other.

Obviously there is still a lot of work to do.

But nevertheless, you, my fellow fans, have been extremely patient and, for reasons that remain beyond me, continue to return and give the network your attention.

For that I am forever grateful. The New Jersey Devils Unofficial Web Site, more affectionately known today as njdevils.info, was a project I started back in 1998 and it has exploded to be one of the most popular Devils fan site on the internet. A lot has happened during its history. I’ve been a guest on internet hockey talk shows, mentioned in the Star Ledger, and even had official giveaways for Stanley Cup Championship DVDs.

All of this is because of one thing: you guys keep coming back and enjoying what my site has to offer.

With that said, I invite you to continue to read on to see what my plans are for the off-season, how much can realistically get done, and the future dreams I have of what can be done with this collection of sites I have developed.

Before I dive in to that, I must thank you again for your patience, cooperation, patronage, and support for the past 11 years. I look forward to starting the fight all over again in October for the 2009-10 season and I hope to see you here for the off-season and the new season that will follow.

In the past few years, njdevils.info has expanded to several web sites. At the Red Line is my blog on the Devils, where I can voice my thoughts and opinions and rant and rave. DevilSphere is a message board for our members to converse and discuss everything and anything. And NJ Devils News Center, now the most popular site in my network of Devils sites, is automatically updated with great news content from official newspapers and blogs on the World Wide Web.

These sites each have their own niche that they appeal to, and I am working to integrate and expand their capabilities and breadth of content they contain.

Njdevils.info will continue to be the hub of everything, containing stats, scores, and media. News will return to the site but in a limited fashion and will mostly point to the News Center for anything more. The members’ area will re-open and feature new mailing lists (automated), network wide profile management, and the ability to track all subscriptions on each network site.

DevilSphere will return after a pretty lifeless first season. Expect to see more promotion of this site, better integration throughout the network, and more attention and topics to spark your interest.

At the Red Line had a pretty good makeover during the course of the season, and we like the new look. Don’t expect too much to change here.

The News Center will have some cosmetic changes and should have all aspects in working order. Since the site is mostly automated, members’ services shouldn’t be too hard to implement. Things like e-mailing, rating, discussing, and saving articles are just some of the things members will be able to do. When that is complete, expect to see the "beta" term dropped from the logo. Additionally, some content from njdevils.info, like current game status and box scores may appear in certain areas of the site, furthering our integration plans.

One other large project is catch-up. Njdevils.info sits severely out of date in many aspects – from box scores to stats to multimedia – everything seems to be out of date. This is my own fault, and it’s mostly because I try to do too much with too little time. There has been a lot of work coming my way and I’ve had difficulty trying to balance time for everything. That plus the fact that my fiancé and I are planning a wedding, getting an apartment, and working full time makes finding time for everything very difficult.

Two things are going to help with the "time" factor. More and more I am automating tasks – the largest of the projects being the News Center and that took 4 years to implement, seriously! The second is that many of the projects I had been working on are now developed and in working order.

Now my life would not be complete if I wasn’t planning yet another Devils site, and sure enough I am. I won’t give too much away at the moment only because I’m not 100% sure the direction I am going with it yet, but it will most likely involve a revitalization of the Multimedia area.

As you can read, a lot of work sits ahead of me. The likelihood of me actually finishing everything is slim, I know. But every now and again it’s nice to get my plans out in the open, get everything out of my brain and on to paper.

For now, thank you for stopping by, reading everything, and I hope you have a wonderful off-season. As mentioned previously, I will be posting occasional updates, especially with all the free-agents the Devils have sitting in their roster. I hope to see you here for the latest news and rants!
